1. Background of establishment

Seba Social Foundation (SSF) is a local NGO established in the Hazirhat village of Kamolnagor under the Lakshmipur District of Bangladesh. In 2009 a few young educated people under the leadership of Jashim Uddin Ripon formed `Seba Social Foundation’-SSF with a view to promote social activities.  From the beginning, SSF started to organize local poor people into different homogenous groups with the objective to secure their rights and to help them assume responsibilities which would lead to their empowerment and promote self-employment. This approach is meant to give the poor people the opportunity to live peaceful and dignified lives. 

Now, SSF is a promising NGO in the north-eastern part of Bangladesh and is working towards community empowerment SSF works with the poor to ensure health, sanitation, education, human rights, environmental development, skill development and alternative livelihood along with reducing vulnerability to climatic change and conserving environment.

To Established, Socio-Economic Development and empowered poor and vulnerable rural peoples including women and children in the society.      

10. Mission Statement:

To establish the poor and vulnerable people including women and children in the society through making them aware, capable, self-reliant, and self- initiators through capacity, institutions, utilization of local resources and imparting self-need based problem solving programs involving necessary skilled, trained, experienced and qualified personnel. 

11. Approach and strategy:

SSF’s emphasis is on bottom up, participatory and integrated development framework basing target group development approach but it implements activities following community-based approaches in special cases. It mainly emphasis the fullest participation of the people in every development effort and initiative and joint venture project for the people’s development.

Improvement of the overall socio-economic situation of the targeted peoples. 

13. Beneficiaries/Target Group:

SSF selects Beneficiaries through the following criteria: 

Underprivileged man, women and children of the poor and poorest families are the main target peoples of the organization. However, in some special cases the whole peoples of the society are the target peoples of the organization. 

14. Objectives of the SSF:

  1. To motivate and organize people in a small group.
  2. To increase the capacity level of leadership management and professional skills among the group members.
  3. Assist grassroots-level poor women to develop their skills and knowledge on modern agricultural technology.
  4. Motivate community people to increase savings habits for poverty alleviation and improvement of the socio-economic status of the target people.
  5. To provide technical, training, and credit support to the women for undertaking the operating income-generating activities to alleviate their acute poverty. 
  6. Non-formal education for audit and the most disadvantaged children.
  7. To ensure the involvement of the people in process of social & environmental development specially water and sanitation utilities, Tree plantation etc.
  8. To improve the agriculture livestock fisheries through regenerative agricultural method.
  9. To raise awareness on STD/HID/AIDS through different media. 
  10. The provide basic health services to the target women and children through domiciliary and clinical services towards improvement of their health condition. 
  11. To take care of & social forestry and work activity.
  12. To assist the disable people in every possible way.
  13. To Ensure women and children rights & support legal aid support to victim especially women and minority peoples
  14. To Establish strong networking and information sharing with groups with others organizations.

15. Organizational Governance and Management

21 enthusiastic, dynamic and experienced social volunteers of the locality form the general body of SSF. General body is the supreme authority for the policy formulation and proper guidance of the organization. The general body holds annual meeting regularly. It holds more than one meeting in a year if and when necessary. The members of the general body elect a 7 members executive committee after every 2 years. The executive committee abides by the constitution, hold quarterly meeting regularly and executes the plan and policies adopted by the general body.

According to the constitution, the secretary of the executive committee will be the Executive Director of the organization. He materializes the entire plan and policies by the assistance of a team of experienced and qualified staff members. He reports the progress of activities to the Executive Committee in its regular meeting. The Executive Director is solely responsible for field level implementation of all the activities. He is the supreme authority of the administration. He carried out the development activities with the assistance of a team of permanent staff members and the primary stakeholders. Due to democratic, friendly and participatory management of the organization there always remains an enabling environment.

19. Main Activities:

a) Non-Formal Education Program: 

Education is the first and major component of SSF intervention. Therefore, it makes aware the people and makes literate. In these respects, it runs Non-Formal Education educational activities. 

As we know, Bangladesh is trying to alleviate the course of illiteracy and the combined campaign of NGO and Go against illiteracy is seems to reaching its ultimate aim. SSF also want to be a participant of expedition of literacy. So, it takes this Non-Formal education program as a vital part to achieve its mission along with other programs. To combat the curse of illiteracy SSF feels to instate the education program. The Staffs of SSF conduct Non-Formal Education / literacy courses through establishment of Non-Formal Education Centers at Kamolnagor Upazila of Lakshmipur district with its own support.

b) Water-Sanitation & WASH Program: 

Sanitation is an important part of public health and requires due attention specially in villages of Bangladesh. Keeping its importance in mind, SSF has launched a sanitation project in its project area. 

We have already been distributed & installed about 500 (five hundred) sets of Sanitary latrines, 20 Set Tube-wells for Arsenic free & safe waters to the poor villagers. SSF has been implementing this program to achieve 100% sanitation of its targeted areas. 

SSF has been in the implementation WASH & Cleanliness program among poor villagers and students. Training and motivational activities conducted to maintain WASH & Cleanliness in personal life.

c) Primary Health:

Health  is ongoing program of the organization and all the field are covered with this program through weekly group meetings the Community people and group members are made aware on health and hygiene. Beside this the organization arrange primary health care including maternal health, National Immunization Program at its working areas.

d) Income Generating Activities- IGA

SSF provide Income Generating Activities because almost all the beneficiaries are poor or jobless. They need stillness to their life and families. For this reason, there are so many options of vocational training so that they can choice according to their own interest and capacity.

There are some sectors of IGA training like toy making, handicrafts, doll making, bookbinding, candle making and pottery. Besides this vocational training, there is some other training for income generating activities such as goat raring, homestead gardening, agriculture, plantation of trees, poultry, fish farming etc. These training are especially for adult women or housewife.

After completion of IGA training, SSF try to link them in the relevant work places. 

e)  Handicrafts- Bamboo & cane, Naksikatha, Tailoring etc. 

The organization arranges occupational skills development training for the destitute women and the adolescent girls from 2010 so far 230 destitute women and 70 adolescent girls have been provided skills development training courses on Embroidery Bamboo & cane, Naksikatha, Tailoring etc.  Most of them have been involved in tailoring and embroidery activities.

f) Women Rights/Awareness Raising Program on Human Rights:

Issue for women rights is the vital program of the organization. Human rights and social justice for the women in particular are the focal point of the advocacy campaigns. Awareness raising is a very important support for all the programs and also group formation. SSF  has been made aware approximately 2,000 peoples in its working areas on Women and Human Rights.

g) Disable Development: 

Disables are the part of the society and they have rights like others.  Staff members have been working on disability development through identifying and involving them in income generating activities of the program areas. SSF tries to change the social attitude for the disables.

h)   Drug & HIV/AIDS prevention

At present time, HIV/AIDS /Std has become a very alarming issue in Bangladesh so the organization has been educating and motivating the rural people and urban people HIV/AIDS/Std . Already the people of the working areas have become aware about the seriousness of the diseases so they are trying to practice HIV / AIDS /Std education.  In this regard posturing and vide circulation have conducted in the working areas. The staff members continuously educating and motivating the people on HIV /AIDS/ Std diseases.

i) Plantation & Nursery: Our organization established a nursery under this project. The organization planted 4500 numbers of seedlings under this project.

Accommodation: SSF has accommodation for imparting training for its staff and other people. It has a classroom with sufficient spaces.

24.       Financial Management & Auditing: 

The financial policy of SSF provides overall direction of management and financial guideline of the organization. The financial policy includes and accounting procedure logistic management procedure, procurement procedure etc. All kinds of procurement, payments are strictly adhering to the financial guideline. Moreover the organization follows the financial guidelines if it is applicable for that specific project.

Since its inception SSF has followed the principle of getting its project financial transaction and fund management have been subjected to any major adverse comments/recommendation by the audit firm. 

25. Gender policy: 

SSF follows a Gender policy including their rights, working environment, special facilities as a female like Maternity Leave with full payment, Sexual harassment or like this, Protect Privacy, Over time duty etc. It is mandatory for all staffs to follow the ‘Gender Policy’ in its working areas.   

26. Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting System:

Monitoring:               The monitoring includes the processes of the project and impact. Different monitoring formats are use on the basis of project interventions. Output mentoring will be primary concerned with routing repotting of the activities in the target beneficiaries.

Evaluation:                Evaluation are conducted at the end of the project for determining the overall impacts on the target and group and draw lesson for designing the future project and experience sharing workshop. The evaluation done by External Evaluation Team prepared by the SSF and approved by the funding agency. 

Reporting:                 Different types of Reporting formats devised for the project reporting purposes. The reporting  staff member reported to Executive Director monthly along with physical achievement statement of  the project .
